Exploring sound, image, and technology

RESEARCH

Current research investigates how emerging AI technologies are reshaping creative practice in image and sound design, music composition, and voice performance. This work is practice‑based, using hands‑on experimentation and iterative prototyping to test AI tools – can AI replace me?

A big part of this project is comparing AI‑generated audio with human‑created work. I’m looking at perceived quality and how long each approach takes to produce a usable result. Where can AI tools genuinely speed up creative workflows, where do they fall short, and where hybrid approaches end up delivering the strongest outcomes.

It’s also important to acknowledge that most current AI audio generators focus on music and dialogue. These areas include voice-over, narration, and music/song production. In contrast, there’s far less development happening in sound effects, foley, and textural or environmental audio. In cinematic, games and XR worlds these elements are essential. Video generators are also still limited.

I’m using original scripts and adaptations.

This project is in early stages. Part of the work involves noticing and noting what emerges. These include the strengths, the limitations, the fails, and the creative possibilities that surface along the way.

  • How do emerging AI tools reshape creative decision‑making
  • Where does AI meaningfully support artistic practice, and where does it undermine or distort it
  • What aspects of creative labour are uniquely human, and which are most vulnerable to automation
  • How can AI‑assisted workflows act as accelerators for early‑stage ideation and prototyping
  • What ethical, aesthetic, and professional risks arise when AI systems simulate or replace creativity
